FLOATING ORCHESTRA
Floating Orchestra is a progression from the Floating Forecaster project developed in 2010. Where the Floating Forecaster correlated to the 5-day weather forecast and represented different weather systems, the Floating Orchestra is about experimenting and playing with a piece of art and offering the opportunity to conduct it.
This adaptation of the concept allows each ball to become an instrument in the experience allowing the user to create their own installation whilst the balls levitate and move. It is controlled via the touch screen of an iphone but is being developed to be controlled purely by the users movement.
The installation is hugely popular and engages people of all ages: a playful and unique experience that mixes digital technology with the physical world. There’s something intrinsically captivating about the levitating spheres and having the ability to direct them.
“Play. Curiosity. Exploration. That’s the mantra behind a whippersnapper of a Brit design company creating moving objects and installations inspired by the things we take for granted. … the Floating Orchestra, which features white spheres suspended in air by a series of compressors, allows us to reflect on something we cannot ordinarily grasp.” Craig Jacobs, Sunday Times
“The team at Poietic Studio has come up with an innovative way of displaying weather data using polystyrene balls suspended in an airstream.” Duncan Geere, Wired
